What's New in 2011

Glen Elder Dam Repairs
Joe Funk Construction Engineers completed a $550,000 repair project at the Glen Elder Dam, Glen Elder Kansas, in October of 2011. Glen Elder Dam is operated by the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation. It is 3 miles in length and was competed in 1968.

The repairs were to 168 deteriorated sections of the dam’s slope along the entire length. The project required saw cutting and demolition of deteriorated areas, and installation if reinforced concrete repairs at each location. It also included the development and implementation of road closure and drowning prevention plans as additions to the JFCE Safety Program.

McChord AFB Security Fence and Grate Bridge
A project that combines the security of one of our nation’s premier military bases and the wellbeing of two endangered species of salmon requires a government contractor with the skill to complete the requirements with sensitivity to both. In October of 2011, Joe Funk Construction Engineers, Inc. completed just such a project. Clover Creek runs through McChord Air Force Base in Washington creating gaps in the security barrier. It is also a migration route to both Coho and Steelhead Salmon.

The scope of this $475,000 project included the installation of security fencing, fitting removable steel grates into existing culverts, and construction of a 60 foot pedestrian bridge with removable steel grates beneath. Additionally, the restoration of the creek bank with native plants and ground cover insured Clover Creek remained pristine.

The Honors Golf Club Dallas
Joe Funk Construction Engineers began a $2.2 million renovation of The Honors Golf Club Dallas clubhouse in July, 2011. Formerly known as Columbian Country Club, the 40,000 square foot facility was originally constructed in the 1950s. Earlier in the year all interior finishes were demolished as part of an abatement operation.

The new 20,000 sf finish-out will include men’s and women’s locker rooms, pro-shop, commercial kitchen, dining area, bar and administrative offices. The Texas Golf Association has a lease option to occupy the balance of the clubhouse. The exterior work includes building finish updates, new roof system, cart staging area, cart path and landscaping.

What's New in 2010

Fish Raceway Restoration
In November of 2010, Joe Funk Construction Engineers, Inc. completed a $230,000 renovation project for the Department of the Interior, United States Geological Survey. This project was at the North Appalachian Research Laboratory in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. This research facility includes 4 fish raceways which are 20 feet wide and 200 hundred feet long. These raceways are used to conduct studies on aquatic wildlife.

The renovations involved demolition if the existing tensioned fabric shelters and steel frame work and removal of existing Victaulic pipe transitions to allow access for the new structures. New structures were installed on each of four 20’ by 200’ concrete raceways.

Richland College Adaptive Remodel
April 2010—Joe Funk Construction Engineers has been selected as the Design-Build Team for the Richland College Adaptive Remodel at the Richland College Campus in Dallas, Texas. The renovations consist of over 80,000 square feet over the existing campus including the new Buzz Aldrin Planetarium. This $5.5m renovation will be completed in August 2010. Dallas County Community College District selected JFCE / VAI as the Design-Build team in 2008. Leading the JFCE team is Lou Sussman, Senior Project Manager for JFCE and Dennis Hopper, Superintendent for the project. The Design-Build Team includes VAI Architects, led by Principal in Charge, Barton Drake. "We are proud to selected as the Design-Build Team working with DCCCD, Richland College and VAI Architects. This is the second project we have done together, including the new Richland College Garland Campus. We are excited to be part of the continuing upgrades to Richland College and to enhance the learning centers and planetarium for the next generation of students," said Joe Funk Construction Engineers.


First Unitarian Church of Dallas
GroundbreakingApril 2010—First Unitarian Church of Dallas has selected Joe Funk Construction Engineers as the Construction Manager for the construction of their new Religious Education Facility. JFCE will break ground in April 2010. The new 25,000 square foot, multi-story Religious Education Facility will include classroom space, a library and an adult education center. The project will be Silver LEED Certified. In addition JFCE will renovate an existing 6,000 square foot facility for administration offices and provide new parking and site utilities. Construction will be completed in 12 months. Leading the JFCE team is Glenn Sefton, Senior Project Manager at JFCE and Richard Lanier, Project Superindent. The Architect for the new facility is Architexas Architects (www.architexas.com), and led by John Allender. "After a year of pre-construction phase services, including submitting four budgets, it is an exciting time to start construction. We are pleased to be selected as the Construction Manager, building upon our strong relationship over the last year and looking forward to working with First Unitarian Church of Dallas and Architexas Architects to construct this beautiful new facility," stated Glenn Sefton, Senior Project Manager for JFCE.

Dallas ISD Bid Package 24: Boude Storey Middle School, Harrell Budd Elementary School
March 2009—Dallas ISD selected Joe Funk Construction Engineers as their number one ranked General Contractor for a $9.6m, two school renovation package. Construction will start in April and will be completed in August 2010. Renovation work at Storey MS and Budd ES includes new mechanical systems, DDC Controls, HVAC, electrical and plumbing upgrades, new roofing, security systems, PA systems, new doors and hardware and architectural finishes. Leading the JFCE team is Lou Sussman, Senior Project Manager, Jason Brumfield, Assistant PM, Marvin Kessler and Gerald Wallace as Project Superintendents. The Architect for both schools is Booth Architecture, led by Gerald Ward. Parsons is the Program Manager and led by Luis Delgado, Kevin Simon and M/WBE Coordinator Jackie Barnes. Parsons is one of three Program Managers selected for the 2008 Dallas ISD Bond Program.
"It is an honor working with Dallas ISD again and we are looking forward to working with Parsons and Booth Architecture. The team assembled has been excellent to work with and we are gearing up for construction phase services this summer."

What's New in 2009

Coppell ISD Phase 3 Renovations
March 2009—Joe Funk Construction Engineers has been selected as the Construction Manager for the Coppell ISD phase 3 renovations. This $10m renovation package will enhance 10 schools within the District. The renovations include mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades, roofing and architectural finishes. Leading the JFCE team is Lou Sussman, Senior Project Manager. Lou also completed the phase 1 and 2 renovations at Coppell ISD the last two summers. The Architect is SHW Group, led by Mike Elmore. SHW Group is a preeminent Architectural firm in Texas.
"We are extremely pleased by the diligence and advanced planning by Coppell ISD and SHW Group. To renovate 10 schools, over a summer, takes a great deal of teamwork, communication and collaboration. As usual Coppell ISD and SHW Group have passed with flying colors."

New Tech High @ Coppell
March 2009—Coppell ISD has selected Joe Funk Construction Engineers to convert Lee Elementary School into New Tech High, a new high school for the District. This $2.2m conversion / renovation will take place over the summer of 2009 and will be ready to occupy for the 2009 - 2010 school year. The team is led by Sid Grant and Louis Macias with Coppell ISD, Mike Elmore and David Burt with SHW Group and Lou Sussman and Phillip Adlof with JFCE. New Tech High @ Coppell is a source of tremendous pride for Coppell ISD, the City of Coppell and the community. This new High School will be created for project based teaching and learning that began in Napa, California in 1996. New Tech High @ Coppell is the wave of the future for public schools in Texas.

N. Lamar High School Addition
April 2009—N. Lamar ISD has selected Joe Funk Construction Engineers as the Construction Manager to build a 19,000 square foot classroom addition to their high school. This $3m addition will be completed in July 2010. Leading the team for JFCE is Glenn Sefton, Senior Project Manager and Superintendent, Mike Morrison. The Architect is SHW Group and led by Monte Zajicek. SHW Group is a preeminent Architectural firm in Texas.
